It's obviously inspired by the 3D mario games in everything, especially mario 64 and galaxy. But to focus on that is to disrespect this game which is truly original and new. Every world is so unique and fun, with hilarious voice acting and beautiful visuals. Even though the switch port doesn't run perfectly this game is still a ten. The character moves so well and is simply fun to control, there are so many little nuances in the movement like how you get a speed boost if you roll out of a dive correctly or how the only way to change directions mid air is with your double jump. This game is a beacon of creativity fu anf love anf is a must play for anyone who likes good game

The best 3D platformer of all time, even rivaling the revolutionary Super Mario 64, this game is way more technical than Mario Odyssey too.

The brilliant humour, fun worlds, and exciting gameplay all lend themselves to making this game incredibly enjoyable. The characters you meet on your journey each have great dialogue and personality through all their twists and turns, with varying levels that spice things up and will put a smile on your face from all the fun quirkiness they cram in. The game is also not too long or hard, which can make it a fun game for all ages. The music is also incredible and memorable, with plenty of great tunes. Graphics and camera quality can be issues at times, but these are little more than small problems. The Xbox One edition does have some flaws such as the lack of DLC and the Completionist's Hat not appearing, but overall this game is incredible and one of my favourites of all time!

I got alot of frustation because the character doesn't move the way it suppose to. I got stuck on a level because she can't running on wall somehow and thats it i uninstall it immediately.

All the levels in the game are amazing none are bad and none are boring, with the inclusion of FANTASTIC BOSSES is always appreciated. The collective nature of this game is top notch it’s so satisfying, while also listening to gamings top 10 amazing soundtracks! Nothing negative could be said about this game it’s charm heavy with so much extras like cute costumes power ups and excellent extra levels. A Hat In Time is a Masterpiece done right for a 3D platfromer, and a must have for every gamer even the ones who don’t like 3D Platfromers, it’s that damn good. (A Masterpiece 5/5) You Must Play It!

Of course, this isnt much of an issue with people that play on PC with modding giving you a possibly infinite selection of levels, but for console gamers such as myself, there isnt really a thing that I can do outside of buying the DLC. But anyways, onto the good. A super cute and charming art style, if a bit generic, super tight gameplay, a great story, super fun boss fights, it's honestly really amazing, just play it. It's only $40.
Taking into account the stuttering, low resolution textures, and downgraded 3D models, this is still an incredible game. When I started playing, the game was a bit harder to look at, but as I continued and got back into the flow of its platforming I stopped caring about the visuals. While the glitches are still bothersome, it’s a testament to just how good A Hat in Time is that I still adored the game in this compromised state.

From its bright colors to its exuberantA Hat in Time is a sheer joyful platforming experience that goes toe-to-toe with Super Mario Odyssey. From its bright colors to its exuberant soundtrack, the game emits an air of wondrous childlike happiness echoed by its protagonist, Hat Kid. This energy translates into Hat Kid's movement, which is responsive and robust, allowing for some truly neat tricks the game subtly encourages you to learn through its excellent level design. Levels are greatly varied and while some accuse it of being lacking in focus, I think it executes strongly enough on each of these level themes to justify experimenting with such a plethora of ideas ranging from the mandatory stealth, to fast-paced gauntlets, to its signature open-world exploration, to even a murder mystery of sorts. It doesn't get all of these ideas right, but compensates in the levels it's strongest at, and also by being cheeky, cute and lively, A Hat in Time is fun to play and a truly memorable experience.
A Hat in Time brings back a genre that, as Nintendo fans, we hold a ton of nostalgia for. Even with some archaic mechanics present, this is still one of the best modern examples of what a 3D platformer should be.
While it's true that the game presents some technical issues that need correction, there's plenty of positive elements that make this a fun and involving game, including the variety of levels and the humor that can be found throughout the entire experience.
A Hat in Time is a hugely enjoyable take on the classic 3D platformer. The tight, familiar controls and varied, innovative levels result in one of the most fascinating and entertaining games out there. The issues with performance and the camera do little to wipe the smile from our faces while playing through this; if you adore the likes of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, then you'll fall utterly in love with A Hat in Time.
On Nintendo Switch, A Hat in Time is still a very good 3D platform-action game that will thrill even more those who have experienced the glorious hours of Rare on N64 or the arrival of the revolutionary Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo console. For others, the humor, the many ideas, the perfect rhythm should be enough to immediately seduce them.

When it comes to 3D platformers, this one is one of the best in years, with focused level design, fun world and precise controls. But the port suffers in some parts compared to the PC. Some occasional framerate jittering can be annoying when trying to perform platforming challenges, but I'm personally more annoyed by the fact that in some of the missions, certain textures completely bugged out for me and that ruined some of the jokes (Notably every point on the bill for destruction of property etc. in Dead Bird Studios was completely unreadable red blocks for me).I would highly reccomend this game based on the PC version, but unless you really want to scratch the 3D platformer itch, I'd wait for a performance patch. It's a great game well deserving its praise, but not yet on the Switch.
A Hat in Time is a delightful 3D platformer, with tight controls, some of the best humour seen in the genre to date and compelling scenarios driving the collectathon aspect of the game. It doesn't revolutionise anything in the presentation department, with rather low polygon models and scenery, but that doesn't take anything away from the enjoyment to be had on any platform it has been released on so far. On Switch, it is held back by some low-res textures and a resolution of only 720p in docked mode, but it does fare better overall in portable mode. Then, still specific to this Switch version is occasional stutter and long load times giving it a rough looking varnish that could perhaps still get ironed out through a patch.
A Hat in Time + Seal the Deal knows what kind of game it is, and it certainly pays homage to titles that built the genre. It has its own cute, quirky personality but it definitely trips over itself, despite a valiant effort to be a great 3D platforming experience. It just needs to run better, and iron out its rougher spots so that it can throw its own hat into the ring of the best 3D platformers.

The hat and badge mechanic is very creative and funtional. Missions in the game are always different, like switching from a miniboss to a survival horror. The characters are rememberable and unique with great voiceactors, especially the Conductor and Empress. My only problems are the minor bugs, small problems with wallrunning and the very disappointing and rushed ending cutscene.

We have no idea what happens next. But hopefully there'll be DLC to add onto the story, or maybe another game.

Felt like I was running into walls and wasn't flowing well through the levels.- When I wanted to end the game I got the required hourglasses but hidden behind that was that apparently you had to have certain hats. This was not obvious and I had to go grind for yarn which was annoying. I had bought the most expensive hat not knowing this and was frustrated.- Loading times were too long
In the end, A Hat In Time features enough charm to overcome its shortcomings. If you can live with the unreliable camera, then you'll find a game that offers a pleasant platforming experience, tons of secrets to uncover, and a good amount of abilities to experiment with. The variety of environments and activities is appreciated, as are some of the breaks from platforming norms. The characters may be the main reason for playing the gamefrom beginning to end, just to see what they'll say or do next. For fans of platformers, A Hat In Time is well worth your time.
A Hat in Time is the kind of game you don't see very often anymore: an incredible fun-for-all-ages romp that isn't exclusive to Nintendo. It's ceaseless dedication to making every moment feel fresh and exciting is admirable – even if a few technical hiccups slipped through the cracks. It's an incredibly fun platformer that never stops surprising. It's the kind of game that just makes you happy. Heck, the game is making me smile right now, and all I'm doing is writing its review.
However, as an overall product, A Hat in Time is a must-buy for any 3D platforming fan. The pacing is superb in every stage, and there’s far more variety here than in any 3D platformer released in the past decade. The game definitely has some rough edges – but they’re a bit like eating a fine meal on a cracked plate. The overall experience is so great that you don’t remember the small nagging issues very much. The camera could definitely use some work, and the soundtrack may not be the most memorable ever – but it’s genuinely great, as is the voice work. It’s clear that this was a passion project, and it’s one of the finest crowd-funded projects ever made.
A Hat in Time is a game as adorable as mature. You will love its adult sense of humor besides the great variety of levels and situations that The Girl With a Hat will face. It is a great tribute to the old 3D platform games.
I made a Metacritic account just so I could make this review. This game is perhaps one of the last surviving members of the 3D platformerI made a Metacritic account just so I could make this review. This game is perhaps one of the last surviving members of the 3D platformer genre . . . that likely means nothing, so I'll say this: if you feel the urge to retire from the endless slew of cash cow FPS games and return to the older days of plot, adventure and puzzles, pick this game up. For $30, you get one big nostalgia trip, and it was personally thrilling for me. It might as well be the third installment in the Super Mario Galaxy saga. The game came from nothing . . . it was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and thus is nothing close to a "triple A title" like Call of Duty or Zelda games, but it feels like it is! There are times where the camera is oddly positioned, but that's nothing terrible(makes it more challenging and fun, really) since I 100% the game without finding a single glitch or restart-prompting error. One or two voices at the end were missing, but the classic text on the screen covered well.In short, A Hat in Time is beautiful(did I mention the soundtrack is unbelievable?(Electro Swing)), well-executed and worth playing. Don't let picky critics hack it apart . . . jump in for yourself!
I had hoped for some more originality to be seen in the game’s mechanics or level design, but the lack thereof doesn’t hinder the quality of the experience. Nothing in A Hat in Time is going to change how you think about 3D platformers, but if you know that ahead of time and are still looking for an enjoyable, cute collectaton, there are definitely worse options to choose from.
Reasonable people can disagree on whether and how heavily to weigh its off-screen issues. What’s less open to debate, however, is how much this game is weighed down by wonky controls and an even wonkier camera. There are other, much better 3D platformers out there, and they’re much more deserving of our time and your money.
Suffice to say, A Hat in Time won’t waste your time. It has put you in the paint program for the same reason it does everything else: because whereas most games are content to occupy your time, A Hat in Time has something it wants to show you. Now get busy with the virtual crayons. It’ll be worth it.
For years people begged for a new, modern 3D Platformer. For years people begged and pleaded, and the games they got were only serviceable to mediocre.Well to those people I say...your waiting is finally over.A hat in time is a pure, wholesome reminder that 3D platformers are not only Alive and well, but ready for the comeback they so definately deserve. Before the era of call of duty and Minecraft fame, there was a time when games like this saturated the market, and everyone loved them.I could go on and on about that bygone era..but I need to get to the meat of this review.A Hat in Time puts you in control of a little girl known only as 'Hat Kid' on your way home from...somewhere, when you are rudely intrrupted by a resident of a planet you are passing.Through some rather unfortunate events, this character breaks the window of your ship, sucking you out into space and down to the planet below. But that isn't the only thing that was sucked out of your ship...The things that fuel your ship, known as time pieces (shaped like hourglasses) are also sucked out with you...The game has 4 levels total, all are chapters with their own sets of acts (or missions) with various goodies and collectables hidden away within them. The first level (or Chapter 1) that you enter is 'Mafia Town', which is inhabited by a group of thugs called...the mafia (ofcourse). This level is essentially a massive island with all manner of little details I shall not go into here.Chapter 2 is called 'Battle of the Birds'. It actually takes place in multiple places throughout, starting in a movie studio, then making you do missions within actual movies and ending with a stealth mission into the basement of the studio. (I honestly don't know how anyone couldn't be intrigued)Chapter 3 is called 'Subcon forest' and takes place in a very spooky forest ruled over by a demonic being called 'The Snatcher'. The missions of this chapter take you from puzzle solving to horror escape (There's a mission in this level where you go into a mansion and have to escape an invincible moster that chases you and makes the scariest noises i've ever heard)Chapter 4 is called 'Alpine Skyline' which is a more open world level, allowing you to traverse it in any way you like to get the time pieces in whatever order you like. The introduction to this level is absolutely breathtaking and is a must-see.A feature of each chapter is that you can unlock 'Time rifts' which act as bonus levels for time pieces.these split into 2 categories: Blue Time Rifts and Purple Time Rifts.Blue time Rifts contain levels very reminiscent of super mario sunshine bonus levels, with moving platforms to cross. The purple time rifts are a bit different, as they have multiple areas requiring you to collect tokens of sorts to open up the exit to the next area until you reach the time piece. One of the coolest features of this game that I haven't mentioned until now is the hats.Yes, the hats. You didn't think Hat Kid was called that for nothing, right? In this game you get to use several different hats, which you unlock over the course of the game by collecting yarn balls hidden in the levels. These hats range from a hat that makes you turn into an ice statue to one that briefly stops time itself. Each one has it's uses and are made even better by the addition of the next thing i'm about to mention...the badges!Yes that's right, badges! In this game you can collect a currency called 'pons' in every level which you can use to buy various things, including badges for your hats, which all have unique upgrades and special abilities from a scooter to a grappling hook. Honestly, this game thought of everything. And finally, the music! The OST for this game is one of the best i've heard in a long time. Every single track is perfect situationally and just fits in to this game, I don't remember the last time I just stopped in a game to listen to the music that was playing. This game truly is a jack of all trades.Essentially, when it comes down to it, A Hat in Time is a perfect example of why we shouldn't give up on these types of games, and also why we shouldn't take them for granted. In a time where the triple A market is saturated with re-releases, remakes and... *shudders* ... microtransactions, AHiT is a diamond in the rough that stands out and proudly says "I'M DIFFERENT".
A Hat in Time is probably the best platformer released this year that doesn’t star that one plumber guy. Anyone who still has fond memories of classic N64 platformers owe it to themselves to check it out. Also for PS4 and XB1 owners this is about as good as it gets without Italian influence. For the price it is more than worth your time. Don’t sleep on this charming title.
An ideal game for X-mas times. Inspired by classic such as Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie and little bites of Luigi's Mansion, it has enough personality to feel original and make its own adventure.
A Hat In Time is a game that is proud to wear its influences on its sleeve and largely does them justice. The 3D platformer features a quirky story, diverse and memorable levels, interesting well-voiced characters, and collectibles that actually have a point. The platforming is responsive and the difficulty scales appropriately on the whole, but the game is let down by camera issues — clipping through objects, zooming in at inappropriate times, and shaking all contribute to unfair deaths for the player, often at the worst possible moment. There's something here for players of all abilities and most will be able to look past its faults for another enjoyable completion.

Anyway, this is a legend ready to unfold in your eyes, something charming, and welcoming to the human eye. And the Hat Kid is so damn adorable...
A Hat in Time excels with an overwhelming charm in its writing and art direction that overcomes any missteps in these areas. Its core, smooth mechanics also benefit from promising ideas, but none of them prevent the game from being pulled into a wormhole of mediocre level design and objectives. The potential for phenomenal platforming and exploration is here, but for every positive, there seems to be a negative in A Hat in Time.
Buckets of adorable charm and solid platforming fundamentals win out over some minor shortcomings to cement A Hat in Time as one of the best surprises of the year.
A Hat in Time is more than a lovingly crafted homage to the world of platformers; it’s a delightful adventure in its own right that brings creative innovation to the genre in an abundance of wonderful ways.
A Hat in Time is delightfully charming and always manages to take a left turn, surprising and challenging even a storied gamer like myself.
A Hat in Time has certainly been well worth the wait, and is easily recommended to platformer fans across all formats. It sits nicely alongside Yooka-Laylee and offers a different take on the N64 nostalgia that both titles share. It’s unlikely to knock Mario off his perch as king of the 3D platformers, but it is a more than acceptable pretender to the crown. It also has a central antagonist called Moustache Girl who is a girl with a bushy moustache. A Hat in Time opens up to be a real standout in the recent renaissance of the 3D platform game.
A Hat in Time is that rare Kickstarted game that had a lofty goal and succeeded. Not only does the game live up to the 64-bit collectathon nostalgia that so many of us have been craving, but it also revamps the standard formula. Every level feels completely different from the last, and a diverse mission structure keeps the adventure from growing stale. It’s a wholly charming experience that made me smile silly. Hat Kid controls like a dream and is also a ridiculously cute mascot whom I’d like to see more of, along with more adorable hats. Anyone who has fond memories of the 3D platforming genre would do well to check out A Hat in Time.
The origins as a hobby project are too visible from the get-go. Clumsy controls and problematic camera are not up to par - but unfortunately these are the cornerstone of any decent platformer.
A Hat in Time is more interested in looking around than staring backward. This is a challenging exercise for a 3D platformer, and yet A Hat in Time keeps its perspective balanced between careful devotion and sensible progression. Being responsive to your environment, as it turns out, makes it easier to see where you should be going.
Amazing! Me and the wife have not been able to stop playing it! We didn't expect it to hook us as much as it has and I didn't expect it toAmazing! Me and the wife have not been able to stop playing it! We didn't expect it to hook us as much as it has and I didn't expect it to have such variety of levels and worlds. Each world is way different than the next and soon as you think this world is your favorite then the next one blows you away. My favorite is the Halloween themed one so far but the viking one is very cool too.Think Mario galaxy but with a special hat and the levels are not globe shaped. Way more special moves than mario though for sure and lots of replay value. It makes you want to go back and explore for the hidden orbs that it shows you pictures of.We Love it.
This is a game with undeniable soul and an incredible amount of shine considering its budget. There’s very little that A Hat in Time can’t do as a classic platformer, and it really throws itself into creating a cute and cohesive universe for you to explore.
